The Soft Side of Steel is an investigation and exploitation of steel’s natural characteristics. The developed steel-fabric utilises unique ‘resistance welding’ techniques, in order to create structural elements, where welds allow areas to revert back to steel’s natural solid form. The project juxtaposes the materials’ haptic qualities through the creation of objects that simultaneously convey notions of warmth and coolness, hard and softness. ‘The Soft Side of Steel’ re-contextualises steel wool through deconstructing its functionality and crudeness to reveal its delicacy and refinement. The work is driven from a blacksmith’s perspective with a tailor’s ideology.
